School-to-Work Partnership Kicks Off at LHS

School-to-Work Partnership Kicks Off at LHS
Posted on 10/23/2018

To best prepare an educated, skilled and motivated workforce, a new partnership has been formed by the Target Upstream Distribution Center and Suffolk Public Schools. This school-to-work partnership will provide opportunities for career paths in logistics as well as connecting the importance of workplace readiness skills to long-term professional success.

The Suffolk Target Upstream Distribution Center operates in more than 1.8 million square feet of space and employs almost 1,300 full-time employees, making them Suffolk’s largest private employer.  The new program will collaborate specifically with career and technical education students at Suffolk’s Lakeland High School and incorporate the Commonwealth‘s Career Readiness Initiative principles.  This opportunity will assist students with identifying the technical knowledge and workplace skills necessary for entry-level employment.

It is the goal of Suffolk Public Schools to strengthen the career exploration, awareness, and development of students as they transition from school to work.  A select group of 28 students, aged 17-18, will participate in the initial fall program that will feature three separate classes and include a tour of the Target Upstream Distribution Center.  The program will be repeated in the spring, providing opportunities for a new set of students.  After successfully completing the two classes, students will visit the distribution center, followed by a guided voluntary application submission for prospective employment.
