Dr. David Reitz, Principal

Before coming to Booker T. Washington Elementary School, my professional career was within the Virginia Beach City Public Schools, Virginia Beach, VA for many years. I held the positions of elementary teacher and elementary assistant principal. Although my former school district was very large in comparison to Suffolk, what I find comparable is the child-centered approach to education that characterizes both districts and results in an excellent school program. Most recently, I was the assistant principal at Nansemond River High School, but the majority of my experience lies within the elementary school setting. I live in Olde Towne Portsmouth in a restored 1901 home that was featured on HGTV. I grew up in Western Pennsylvania, and attended the University of Pittsburgh. Upon completion of by degree I accepted a job with Virginia Beach City Public Schools and have been in the area since 1993. I completed my master’s degree in administration at ODU and my doctorate from Virginia Tech. I spend most of my time outside of work with my one year old Chocolate Lab named Abby, working on my home, biking the local trails, and enjoying the many blessings life has to offer. Throughout my career I have become a collector of frogs and you will see part of my collection in my office. I love to eat Doritos, pizza, and peanut butter. My greatest initiative is to provide the leadership that will facilitate a school environment to provide differentiated instruction to meet the needs of each student to the best of our ability. The educational program must be academically challenging, engage each student by linking the curriculum to previous knowledge and experience, and also be exciting to promote further exploration of new ideas. Parents, teachers, support staff, and administration all have an important role to encourage our children to become active learners. It is my sincere desire to provide expanded opportunities for our students to acquire the skills to become productive citizens in a vastly changing society.

Gwendolyn Williams, Assistant Principal

Words cannot express how excited I am to be welcomed into the Booker T. Washington family. My greatest aspiration has always been to serve people! It is for that reason I elected to enter the field of education. I’ve been in education for eighteen years now and for me it is a call to action. As a child, school was a safe place for me and I’ve loved learning for as long as I can recall. I have served as teacher, academic coach and elementary assistant principal at Northern Shores Elementary. I’ve earned degrees from Virginia State and Norfolk State Universities. Most recently, I received the Educational Specialist degree from Old Dominion University. I am a native of Portsmouth, Virginia, a wife of a Navy retiree and mother to two children ages 21 and 19. I am a member of the Delta Sigma Theta, Sorority Inc., a public service organization dedicated to meeting the needs of people. I understand the power of education and it is my strong desire to empower others.
